Pork is sometimes called, “the other white meat.” However, it is actually a red meat, and as a red meat it brings along with it some great health benefits, as well as the unique pork flavor that comes from its high fat content...and pork fat is good fat!

In my previous newsletter, I talked all about fat and how important it is to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Pork has a bad reputation of being unhealthy because of its fat content, but that reputation is unfair and untrue.

Healthy pigs fed a nutritious diet, and living a healthy lifestyle, produce healthy pork that contains healthy fats, it's that simple!

Now I am not saying to go out and eat a bunch of pork every day, of course all things in moderation. But, what I am saying is that pork can be a wonderful, healthy, and tasty part of your regular diet.

Here are just a few reasons to enjoy pork on your plate:

  1. Pork is full of essential nutrients and vitamins.

Pork is a great source of vitamins and minerals like selenium, phosphorus, and thiamine. It is actually a richer source of thiamine (an essential B vitamin) than other red meats like beef and lamb.

Also abundantly found in pork is vitamin B6, B12, and Selenium which is essential for good thyroid function. In fact just one 6 ounce pork chop can contain 100% of your daily value of Selenium.

  1. Pork is good for your muscles!

Pork is great for muscle maintenance and increased muscle performance. It contains the amino acid beta-alanine, which helps your body form a compound called carnosine. Carnosine is important for muscle function.

The complete amino acids found in pork are perfect building blocks for creating new muscle.

Good levels of carnosine have also been linked to lower fatigue and higher muscle performance in humans.

  1. Good for the skin.

Pork is a good source of collagen and we all know collagen is good for the skin.

Collagen can be found in the more unique cuts of pork like the feet, snout, and ears. These cuts have been used in traditional food preparation for centuries, and that is because there is so much healthy goodness stored in them!

Making homemade pork broth will give you a delicious skin healing food.

And I cannot forget lard!

Lard is rendered pork fat, and it is wonderful for rubbing directly onto skin as a moisturizer.

Lard is like your great, great grandmother's secret to glowing skin!

  1. And simply because it’s delicious.

Eating healthy is important, but that doesn’t mean we ever need to sacrifice taste!

When it comes to flavor, pork is where it is at!

Pork is wonderfully versatile and can be used in a wide variety of dishes and paired with an infinite amount of flavors. Pork is like your blank canvas in the kitchen, spice it up however you would like.

Enjoy pork because it is healthy, but also eat it simply because it tastes good!

In a world of foods designed to hack our brains, where can we find true pleasure?

Why do we like food? Put simply, we like food because it tastes good. When we think about tasty food we tend to think about pleasure, and pleasure is good right? Yes, it is. But, pleasure is actually an element of survival and that is why we seek it out. That is also why big food companies spend big money creating foods that light up the pleasure centers of our brains. These days many of us don’t think about the survival aspect of food. More often it is about convenience and taste.
